Privacy Policy

Last updated: 25 September 2026

This site is designed to need as little of your data as possible. There are no user accounts, no sign-up, and no tracking of who you are. This page explains exactly what does happen.

What we collect

Nothing you have to give us. You can use every feature of the map and the boards without providing any personal information.

Server logs. Like every website, our web server records standard access logs (your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser's identifying string). These are used only to keep the site running and secure, and to apply rate limits that protect the service from abuse. Rate-limit counters are keyed by IP address and expire automatically within two minutes.

Your location — only if you ask. The "Locate me" and "Find my train" buttons use your device's location, and only after your browser asks your permission. Your position is processed in your browser and is not sent to our servers, with one exception: if you choose to share your position to improve a train's location for other users, positions are sent with an anonymous random token generated on your device. No account, name, IP address or device identifier is stored with them, and they are deleted automatically after 24 hours. Sharing stops when you tap stop, when you leave the train, or when you close the page.

Cookies and similar technologies

Advertising (Google AdSense). We use Google AdSense to show adverts. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, and you can opt out of many third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info. If you are in the UK or European Economic Area, you will be shown a consent message and can choose whether personalised advertising is used. Google's own privacy policy is at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Browser storage. The site uses your browser's session storage to remember, for the current visit only, that you declined to share your position for a particular train. It also uses local storage to remember two display preferences: whether you have dismissed the welcome card, and whether you prefer the night or day map. None of this contains personal data, it never leaves your device, and you can clear it at any time from your browser settings.

No analytics cookies. We do not currently run any analytics or audience-measurement service.

Staff login. A session cookie is set only on the site's private blog editor, which is not part of the public site.

Third parties that may see your IP address

To display the map, your browser requests map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap and OpenRailwayMap; their servers therefore see your IP address, as they would for any site using their maps. Their policies: OpenStreetMap, OpenRailwayMap.

Station and article photos are loaded directly from Wikimedia Commons, and the site's typefaces from Google Fonts, so those services also receive your IP address when you view a page. No cookies are set by either. Their policies: Wikimedia, Google Fonts.

If you follow an affiliate link (marked as sponsored, and always leaving via a page on this site), the destination retailer and its affiliate network receive your visit under their own privacy policies.

The live train data feeds we consume send us information about trains, not about you — no visitor data is ever sent to Network Rail, National Rail or their data marketplace.

What we don't do

We do not sell, rent or share personal data. We do not build profiles of visitors. We do not store your location unless you explicitly opt in to sharing it, and even then only anonymously and only for 24 hours.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) you have the right to access, correct or erase personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). Because we hold essentially no personal data, such requests will usually be simple to answer — email kingsib@gmail.com.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top will be updated. Material changes will be noted on the About page.
